Welcome to Fright Night!

From Vamps to Ghosts

Sun Jul 23, 2006, 8:27 PM
I mentioned a while ago, several times, that I wanted to make a pure horror comic...basically said I wanted it to be a slap to the face to recent horror movies.

Well, the story is slowly starting to come together in my head. I still have yet to write it down (if I do), but it is going to be farely simple since I find that most good horror stories are. If you over complicate things after all, you end up spending half the movie searching through papers like in The Ring...which leaves the story with a dissapointing amount of scares. Even if things are left unexplained and the whole thing is even rather bogus, I don't care. As long as it scary.

However, I've sometimes considered on waiting and making it purely animated via my ToonBoom studio. I've mostly deterred from this idea since 1: I suck with ToonBoom, and 2: it would take WHILE, (it would be a series of short animations though) and 3: music and getting decent voice actors (for free probably) is a big issue.

Perhaps sometime though I'll make a little animated experiment and see what comes of it.

I just hope that I don't turn out to be all talk, heh. ^^; Though if I make it in comic form I'm not expecting people to pee there pants...without the effect of a movie that would be very difficult. But I do want to give people nightmares. :mwahaha:

So far the story mostly involves hauntings and possession, in an over-the-top way....and some more minor things will be based on actual events.

Sounds good. Hope you can balance this and VP.

And I could od some voice acting. I have recording equipment on my computer, so I can send it.
I'd love to see what you come up with, especially if you do decide to animate it.

As far as looking for voice actors, I've had a fair bit of experience, and I'd be more than happy to help out, if needed. ^^

HAH. xD
sounds very interesting, i would definitely give it a read, but aside from the usual visual thrillers you might want to add a little twist ... there's a lot of gore out there now a days, people aren't afraid of gore too much anymore, so to spice it up you might want to have some psychologically sick and twisted things ... i find some things dealing with the mind more sick and twisted than normal gore

take for example, full metal alchemist, one episode in paticular twists my gut at the memory of it, it was a progressional thing, but it totally turned your heart cold at the end of it .... it's things like that that scare me out of my wits ...

not there is anything wrong with gore, gore is great, but you just might want to try psyching people's little brains out, sometimes it's not seeing the action, but just the thought of it and leaving things to the imagination that make something horrifying

I probably won't update it as much as VP. Probably like once every two weeks.

If there will be ANY gore, it'll only be a tad. It'll mostly be psychological horror and freaky ghost stuff.^^

some readings you may want to check out if you're trying to do a horror comic/manga:

Preist:
Preist is the only manga or comic that has ever actually scared me. Towards volume 4 the atmosphere of sheer horror that was able to evoke actually left me quite freaked out.

and then the first few volumes of Berserk, while not scary, were able to evoke an extremely dark and sad mood.

My only serious advice is not to make the main characters bitchy whiners who are constantly yelling at each other so much they don't really understand the horror they've uncovered. I also suggest that instead of doing a single "z0mg! scary monster jumping out at stupid teenagers which all could have been avoided had we not been idiots." Seriously, great example of good horror can even be to shock people with detail. This story is a good example (though a bit of a read, trust me: It's worth it.) [link]

Anyways, whatever you come up with in terms of writing this comic is whatever you want.
