Welcome to Fright Night!

Different Vampire Myths

Fri Jul 11, 2008, 7:34 PM
Another journal entry induced by Wikipedia boredom scrounging.

You know, reading about the different vampire myths around the world are also very interesting. Some of them get just plain weird. Here are some different ones I read about -

Asia has a LOT of different vampire myths, but this one particularly caught my eye...for obvious disturbing reasons:
Nukekubi - By day, nukekubi appear to be normal human beings. By night, however, their heads and necks detach smoothly from their bodies and fly about independently in search of human prey. These heads attack by screaming, (to increase their victims' fright) then closing in and biting.
Well that would definitely scare ME!

A vampire in Malay folklore:
Pontianak - Pontianak often appears as a beautiful and at times seductive woman, usually accompanied by the strong scent of frangipani (flowers). According to myth, men who are not wary will be killed or castrated when she morphs into a hideous being; she will also eat babies and harm pregnant women and has been said to cause miscarriages.
A castrating vampire, scary! Men beware!

Jiang Shi -
Reanimated corpses that hop around, killing living creatures to absorb life essence from their victims.
...they....hop around? Can't they walk? I've gotta see this.

Did you know vampires date back all the to ancient Egypt (in a way)? Apparently the goddess Sekhmet drank people's blood.

Also, fun fact for VP readers, the story of Peter Plogojowitz (Wiki article here [link]) might end up being brought up eventually in the comic. -

"Plogojowitz died in 1725, and his death was followed by a spate of other sudden deaths (after very short maladies, reportedly of about 24 hours each). Within eight days, nine persons perished. On their death-beds, the victims allegedly claimed to have been throttled by Plogojowitz at night.

Furthermore, Plogojowitz's wife stated that he had visited her and asked her for his opanci (shoes); she then proceeded to move to another village. In other legends it is said that Plogojowitz came back to his house demanding food from his son, and when the son refused Plogojowitz brutally murdered his own son."

Except maybe....a pole
Cool! I read a book that may interest you it was The History of Vampires I think that was what it was. And it gave a short summery of the history of vampires all over the world in human culture and beliefs. It said that vampirism is a mixture of some of humans strongest idea's, the idea that blood is life and that monsters are coming to get us, really. :D There are tons of weird vampires like this that i've read about. One I really remember was a vampire just and inch tall that would bite your toe as you sleep and if you felt tired or woozy the next day it was because of this inch tall vampire. Weird isn't it?

"Can you turn up the bass?"
Sorry gurl, I can't hear in this place--
"I have a request that I'd like to make!"
Well, what you wanna hear gurl? Shake like an earthquake?
Hahaha, vampires are so fucked up, but we love them so ...

Wow, Sekhmet, hmm? I was born on the month associated with Bast, who is also Sekhmet in a different form ... no wonder I like them so much.

Holy moly on a sour dough rolly!
Vampires are fascinating creatures. I've said it before, that it's a shame that the modern, western interpretation of Vampires is so...uniform. At least it seems that way sometimes.

"There are precious few at ease with moral ambiguities, so we act as though they don't exist!"~Wicked

"Noah, man. You don't fuck with Noah!" ~ Angry Videogame Nerd
The first screaming head vampire sounds like the carniverous flying heads from Ushio to Tora [an anime].

Vampires are fun an interesting [nods]. Especially for term paper fodder.

"If anyone desires to be first, he must be last of all, and servant of all." [Mark 9:35]

"From now, we two will share one will together:
You are my teacher, my master, and my guide." [Canto II 112-113, The Inferno of Dante]
Is it fun to read about other vampire myth and lores. :3
